DONA ONETE (BRAZIL)

GRANDE DAME OF AMAZONIAN MUSIC WITH AN EMOTIONAL AND HUSKY VOICE

HIGHLY RESPECTED SINGER WITH A HUSKY VOICE, A PASSIONATE BAND AND OUTSTANDING DANCE MUSIC, WHICH ENCAPSULATES ALL TREASURES AND CULTURE OF AMAZONIA.

Eighty years old singer could be retired and spending her time relaxing, but why, if she has so much to say and can spend her time doing what she has always desired – music. When she appears on the stage sitting in her wheelchair, your first impression might be compassion and doubts: does this Grande dame of Amazonian music really need this? But your doubts will be immediately changed into total astonishment. Suddenly, you will find yourself at the lively Amazonian dance party which ends when you realise, that the age is nothing but number.

Dona Onete is the ambassador of Amazonian music, that slowly, like tropicália or mangue beat before, has become a part of Brazilian alternative and underground scene. This is where Dona’s connection with the rock band comes from. When they met, they were both surprised: a singer was surprised by the fact that those young people knew her and the band was surprised by her age; considering her voice, they had expected someone much younger.

Her albums are respected and rewarded. And what are the songs of this old lady about? You would be surprised: she sings about love, sex, she touches social topics and she is a big supporter of Brazilian LGBT community. “As an ex-teacher I sure should talk about these topics,“ says Dona.
