TĘGIE CHŁOPY (Poland)

RAW, EARTHY, AMAZING MUSIC FROM THE REGION OF KIELCE

TRADITIONAL DANCE MUSIC FROM THE REGION OF KIELCE, WHERE THE TRADITION OF MUSIC IS VERY STRONG.

Wedding music, although some people deny it, is not a current topic for musicologists. Tęgie Chłopy returned to the traditional dance form of brass bands and their original repertoire, which includes mazurka, polka, folk music or tango was taken back from oblivion also thanks to the legendary eighty years old clarinettist Stanisław Witkowski.

A band from the region, where dance and wedding music is still essential part of tradition, performs the way of “tough guys“. Don’t take it wrong: they are not a band of brawlers, but the music is raw, authentic and chłopy are not just men, there are a lot of women in the band. The name of the band represents a local kind of dance close to mazurka. For the region of Kielce singing melodies are typical, called światówki or śpiwę by the locals.
