The word “kjógen“ is usually understood as a single comic theatre play, traditionally performed between two plays of nó theatre. Kjógen is a comedy genre that is closer to European opera or classical music than to comedies in terms of the depth of acting techniques and the aesthetic level of expressive performance known from our cultural tradition. Since 2001, the Kjógen genre listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as “Masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity”.
